HR UPDATE July 15, 2007
The security aide of a peace consultant of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines was released from Bohol jail Friday (July 13, 2007) following the provisional dismissal of his rebellion charges.
Edgardo Sacamay, 51, aide of NDF consultant Vide Alguna, has been a political detainee for five (5) years when Judge Fernando Fuentes III of RTC-7, Branch 49, issued an order for his release citing “uncooperative conduct of prosecution witnesses in failing to appear in court.”
The order was in response to the “vigorous opposition” of Sacamay’s counsel Artemio Cabatos to another postponement of the hearing on Thursday (July 12, 2007) invoking his client’s right to speedy trial.
Sacamay was arrested on March 5, 2002 outside his residence in Brgy. Subangdaku, Mandaue City.
His release brought down to 13 the number of political prisoners detained at the Bohol Detention and Rehabilition Center.###
